Mane missed five games for Liverpool after sustaining the hamstring injury on Senegal duty in September and returned in the Merseyside club's league win over West Ham United earlier this month.

Alarm bells have begun to ring at Liverpool after key man Sadio Mane returned early from global duty after "feeling his old injury" to his hamstring.

The Reds sent a club physio to oversee the winger's fitness amid fears of a recurrence of the hamstring injury which sidelined him for the past four weeks.

Mane played a key role in Senegal's 2-0 victory against South Africa, helping his team qualify for the World Cup for the first time in 16 years.

Mane has now returned to Melwood where he will be assessed by Liverpool's medical staff to determine the full extent of the injury.

And, according to new reports, Mane's now suffered another setback.

The full statement read, via the Liverpool Echo: "The Senegalese Football Federation informs the national and worldwide opinion that, following the match South Africa against Senegal on Friday, November 10, 2017, in Polokwane, the player Sadio Mane was slightly felt (sic) from his old injury".

Liverpool are back in action again on Saturday when they host Southampton at Anfield.

It was as a result of global duty that Mane sustained the original hamstring injury at the beginning of October, at which point he was forecast to be out for a prolonged period.
