Google Assistant Can Now Broadcast to Compatible Speakers, Acting Like an Intercom
14 November 2017, 08:07 | Brandon Parsons
'Broadcast' feature to turn Google Home & Assistant into an intercom now rolling out
"When you need to round up the family in the morning, just say 'Ok Google, broadcast it's time for school!' and your message will broadcast to all Google Assistant-enabled speakers in your home", Alex Duong, Product Manager, Google Home, said in a blog post.
As the competition in the smart home speaker market continues to heat up from established players Amazon.com Inc. and Apple Inc., which is due to release its premium HomePod next month, Google needs to keep adding new features and devices to remain competitive. Meanwhile, devices should be updated to version 1.26.9393 and have Do Not Disturb off. Google does note that anyone, not just Voice Match users, can broadcast a message.
Before you can start broadcasting voice messages, you need two or more Google Homedevices (any combination of Google Home or Google Home Mini or Google Home Max).
A help article notes that all Google Homedevices must be signed onto the same Wi-Fi network and Google account.
Let us know if you're going to try this, or stick to text messaging your family for announcements (what a sad but convenient time we live in!). You don't have to be near a Google Home speaker for this feature to work, either.
You might have had a home intercom system if you grew up between the 70s and 80s, and that's exactly the kind of functionality Broadcast offers.
Where is this feature available?
It's rolling out today to devices that are set to U.S., Australia, Canada and U.K. English, with further language support coming soon. The iPhone X, Apple's most recent flagship, includes Face ID, a feature that is expected to be incorporated into all of the company's 2018 iPhones.
