Dimitrov's solid run of form was halted by John Isner in Bercy
Bulgaria's Grigor Dimitrov beat fourth-seeded Dominic Thiem of Austria at the ATP World Tour Finals 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 at the O2 Arena here on Monday.
Dimitrov, playing his first match at the ATP Finals, fell behind 0-15 at 6-5 but converted on his third match point for the win.
With Andy Murray away injured, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are the stand-out attractions at this week's tournament but there may be few contests as entertaining as this one, lasting two hours and 19 minutes.
"I'm not going to lie - I was pretty nervous for my first match here", Dimitrov said in his post-match on-court interview. "I'm just very grateful to win that match, especially in that manner".
Both players began the encounter hitting the ball crisply from the baseline but Thiem was the first to be broken in the sixth game of the match and Dimitrov maintained the advantage to close out the opening set without facing a single break point.
Dimitrov arrived in London as the world No. 6, which is his career-high ranking. In a tight second set, sixth seed Dimitrov earned a potentially decisive break point in the 11th game but Thiem, whose service numbers improved significantly, held firm, lashing a forehand victor down the line and edging ahead 6-5.
Consecutive double faults in the following game saw the Austrian lose serve again - this time to love.
