iOS 11 update brings faster wireless charging
Updating your phone isn't enough to boost your charging speed, however.
Apple has yet to release its AirPower charging pad; however, there are some third party options that work well with the iPhone.
In case you were wondering which version of iOS will enable 7.5 watts of fast wireless charging on iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus or iPhone X, now you know. MacRumors originally reported the news after a tip from accessory maker RAVpower. The same iPhone charged from 46 percent to 60 percent over 30 minutes when using a wireless charging accessory that does not offer 7.5W charging speeds.
Qi chargers can support 15W of wireless charging, but it's not known whether Apple's iPhone lineup can do the same.
As a reminder, all new iPhones support wireless charging, but as of iOS 11.1.1, which is the latest official software, only 5W Qi wireless chargers are supported. Still, 7.5W is faster than what you can get right now, so if you're buying your first Qi charging pad, check the box to make sure it outputs at least that much of a charge. Our favorite wireless charger for the iPhone X, 8, and 8 Plus indeed supports 7.5W charging. According to a new report, the iOS 11.2 update will help the latest iPhone devices to charge at 7.5 watts when placed on a compatible Qi-based wireless charging pad. Liang Chen earlier projects include a jailbreak for iOS 11 beta 2 and iOS 10.3.2 that never launched publicly.
