Now, she's making history again as the inspiration behind the first hijab-wearing Barbie. "Last year, she was the first athlete from the U.S to compete in the Olympics wearing a hijab, and today we are thrilled to celebrate Ibtihaj as the first hijab-wearing Barbie".

Though Muslim women will no doubt be elated to have an official hijab-wearing Barbie, hijab-wearing women haven't been waiting for Mattel to include them in official Barbie fashions.

The daughter of a police detective and a teacher, Muhammad grew up with four siblings in Maplewood and discovered fencing when she was 13 years old, winning medals and accolades until she qualified for the Olympics in 2016. The doll will go on sale in 2018.

In her Instagram caption, Muhammad wrote, "I'm proud to know that little girls everywhere can now play with a Barbie who chooses to wear hijab!"

The doll was announced at the Glamour Women of the Year Summit Monday, where Muhammad was honored as part of the "Barbie Shero" program, which recognizes female pioneers and innovators.

Call of Duty: WWII Temporarily Drops Dedicates Servers
Checking now, error code #65568 shows up for me and the usual:The Call of Duty: WWII service is unavailable at this time. The problem here is that players are continually getting kicked off the game server thus adding to aggravation.

Muhammad, who was presented with her doll at Glamour's 2017 Women of the Year Summit, hopes this historic moment will inspire the next generation of girls to live fearlessly.

Muhammad joins an impressive roster of other "Sheroes" including Ashley Graham, Zendaya, Kristin Chenoweth, Gabby Douglas, Emmy Rossum, Trisha Yearwood, Misty Copeland and Ava DuVernay and calls the opportunity "super humbling".

This ground-breaking Barbie is such a win for increased representation and inclusivity. The doll was made in the likeness of Muhammad, complete with a hijab, a fencing uniform, Nike shoes, helmet, and saber. In an effort to make the brand more inclusive Mattel, the company who creates Barbies has made more Barbies with diverse body types. Now girls who wear a hijab can have a Barbie that looks like them too. She's about to become one of the most iconic figures in the toy industry: a Barbie!

Unfortunately though, if you were looking to get this particular Barbie for your child this Christmas, they'll have to wait until the next holiday season.

As Muhammad notes to People, "It's cool to have Muslim girls in the conversation, to have African Americans as fencers is also really cool".
