Putin opened Monday's meeting at Russia's Black Sea resort of Sochi by saying that relations Moscow and Ankara have been "restored practically in full".

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin praised the Astana process for producing concrete results in Syria and creating conditions for a dialogue there.

Turkey sent troops into Idlib province last month to monitor truce there under a deal reached with Russian Federation and Iran.

"Our bilateral relations and cooperation in resolving regional issues provide us with an opportunity to look toward the future together", Erdogan said.

Erdogan said another topic in his meeting with Putin will be the Syrian congress for national dialogue, which was originally slated for November 18 in Sochi but was put off due to Ankara's opposition over the invitation of Syrian Kurdish groups.

On his trip to Russia, he revealed that he will discuss with Putin the political solution to the Syria crisis and joint Turkish-Russian action in its Afrin region, which is under the control of the Syrian Kurdish Democratic Union Party.

Turkey will take the steps necessary to protect itself, Erdogan said after unscheduled meetings with the army chief, prime minister and foreign minister over the weekend.
