Saad Hariri: Lebanon return from Saudi Arabia 'within days'

Missing Lebanese PM test case of Saudi Arabia's emboldened new foreign policy

Voices from the Arab press

Hariri was appointed prime minister late a year ago.

A dual Lebanese-Saudi national, the Saudi-allied Hariri unexpectedly announced his resignation on November 4 in a pre-recorded message on Saudi TV, criticizing Iran and Hezbollah, and saying he feared for his safety.

Saudi Arabia said on Monday that the Saudi-led coalition fighting the Houthi rebels in Yemen will begin reopening air and seaports, days after closing them following a ballistic missile attack by the rebels on Riyadh.

Under Lebanese law the prime minister has to submit his resignation to the president, who must accept it for it to take effect.

"We never meddle in other countries' internal affairs and the issue of Hariri ('s resignation) is up to the people of Lebanon".

"If we want to go back on the resignation, we have to return to the policy of distancing ourselves" from regional conflicts", he said, according to the Associated Press.

He added that a marathon planned in Beirut on Sunday in which tens of thousands are expected to participate should be "a national sports demonstration for solidarity with Prime Minister Hariri and his return to his country".

In September, it carried out its sixth and largest nuclear test - of what it described as "a hydrogen bomb". He was taken to hospital with gunshot wounds to his elbow and shoulder, South Korean officials said.

"I am free", Hariri told the interviewer, apparently seeking to show he was not being detained by the Saudis.

"I am not against Hezbollah as a party, I have a problem with Hezbollah destroying the country", Hariri said during the interview. Before his resignation on November 4, he led a 30-member government that included Hezbollah. Hariri's family lives in Riyadh.

Saudi Arabia has stepped up its rhetoric against Hezbollah and Iran, accusing both of supporting Shiite rebels in Yemen.

The announcement from the Saudi mission at the United Nations came after the coalition fighting Yemen's rebels, known as Houthis, and their allies faced widespread global criticism over the closure, with the UN and over 20 aid groups saying it could bring millions of people closer to "starvation and death".

Iran and Hezbollah have accused Saudi Arabia of holding Mr Hariri hostage. Once he returns, Aoun tweeted, "we will listen to him about all circumstances, topics and concerns that need addressing".

Asked why Hariri was wearing the same suit for three days, he said: "I said I'm not responsible for his closet". We want him to first come to Lebanon.

The announcement comes after Yemeni transport minister Murad Al Halimi said on Friday that airports in the government-held cities of Aden and Seiyun, in Hadramawt province, would be reopening.
