Sessions looking into special counsel for Clinton issues: media reports

US lawmakers to press Attorney General Sessions on Russia contacts

Sessions expected to face questions about knowledge of Russia meetings

To that end, the New York Times reported on Monday night, "People close to the White House believe Mr. Sessions can stop the president from firing him by appointing a special counsel to investigate the uranium deal". The deal was approved in 2010, when Hillary Clinton was secretary of state.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions ordered Monday federal prosecutors to evaluate if a special counsel should be appointed to investigate Hillary Clinton's dealings concerning her foundation and the sale of US uranium assets to Russian Federation.

On Monday, the head of the Justice Department's legislative affairs office responded to those requests by confirming that "senior federal prosecutors" were "evaluat [ing] certain issues raised in your letters".

In a letter to the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Assistant Attorney General Stephen Boyd said the Justice Department lawyers would make recommendations to Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein about whether an investigation should be opened or expanded, or whether a special counsel should be appointed, related to a host of issues of concern to Republicans.

Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., right, talks with Jeff Sessions, who was then a senator and is now attorney general.

Any appointment of a new special counsel, particularly in response to calls from members of Congress or from Trump himself, is likely to lead to Democratic complaints about an undue political influence on a department that is supposed to function outside of any partisan sway or demand.

Red Sox All-Star Mookie Betts bowls a ideal game
Betts was averaging over 200 through the first three rounds of competition this year before pulling off his flawless game. That's a 10-point improvement from his 2015 World Series of Bowling debut, during which he averaged 190 points per game.

He struck a similar note before the Senate Judiciary Committee last month, when he denied knowledge of communications between Russians and Trump campaign officials.

"Everybody is asking why the Justice Department (and FBI) isn't looking into all of the dishonesty going on with Crooked Hillary & the Dems", Trump tweeted in early November, subsequently referring to "deleted E-mails, Uranium, Podesta, the Server, plus, plus." in a subsequent tweet.

Boyd said he was neither confirming nor denying whether the Justice Department was now investigating any of the matters the letter refers to. That issue has been at the forefront of each of his congressional hearings even as Sessions has labored to promote the Justice Department's work and priorities, and Tuesday's appearance is unlikely to be an exception.

One special counsel, Robert Mueller, is conducting an investigation into Russian meddling in last year's election and has announced charges against several former Trump campaign officials stemming from their dealings with Russian operatives or pro-Russian interests.

House Republicans in recent weeks have launched their own probes into the Obama administration and Clinton's emails.
