Largest diamond ever auctioned to go under hammer in Geneva
This is the largest untreated diamond produced in the country and the 27th largest in the world.
Christie's in Geneva sells the famous French diamond "Le Grand Mazarin", and a flawless D-color emerald-cut diamond necklace dubbed "the most lovely diamond in the world" at an auction on Tuesday night.
"I am disappointed that the Art of De Grisogono didn't sell for a more dazzling price", he said in a statement.
Nonetheless, Rahul Kadakia, auctioneer and head of Christie's worldwide jewels division, said that it was a record price for a D-colour diamond at an auction.
D is the highest colour grade attributed to a diamond, indicating that the stone is completely colourless, and thus extremely rare. The brilliant, which is of extremely high-quality and clearness is made of the 404-carat diamond found a year ago in Angola. Ten diamond-cutting specialists worked on the rough in NY after it was analysed in Antwerp.
To show the diamond at its best, a team of jewellers has worked for over a year, setting the stone into a necklace containing nearly 6,000 emeralds and over 800 smaller diamonds. The stone was the largest of its kind ever auctioned. The necklace is made of 18 diamonds on one side and two rows of pear-shaped emeralds on the other. This is the first time that the spectacular diamond has been sold at public auction since the famous sale of the French Crown Jewels in 1887. It was the final lot of the auction and sold for $14,463,393.
Christie's jewel auction, which raked in sales totalling 105.4 million Swiss francs, will be followed today by a similar auction at Sotheby's.
The Geneva autumn auction season concludes on Wednesday, when Sotheby's will auction a pink diamond worth as much as US$30 million.
