Firefox Quantum with faster browser engine is now available to everyone
15 November 2017, 01:07 | Brandon Parsons
Firefox Quantum arrives with faster browser engine, major visual overhaul, and Google as default search engine
It's actually pretty impressive. More than 700 authors have contributed code during the testing phase. The developers have overhauled the core engine and implemented new technologies to provide a fresh coat of paint, in addition to plenty of under the hood changes to improve the user experience. Of course the company can't steal from itself, which means Mozilla tried to do a quick joke whilst announcing their new web browser.
As for the user interface, Mozilla details: "We call this initiative Photon, and its goal is to modernize and unify anything that we call Firefox while taking advantage of the speedy new engine". There's a whole style guide available for your perusal if you do so desire. But since the last couple of years, Mozilla is working hard to give back Firefox the position it once had.
In spite of going up against Google in the program space, Firefox resorts to utilizing Google as the default internet searcher in the US, Canada, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Quantum will also have 60 search providers pre-installed across more than 90 languages which, according to Mozilla, is the largest variety of search providers when compared to any other browser.
The greatest offering objective of Quantum versus Chrome is the littler RAM utilization - something Google has been a few times studied for throughout the years. It achieves the speed boost thanks to a new browsing engine. Instead, the recommendations come from Pocket users around the world. "They're curated from the millions of items being saved to Pocket every day, so they do a great job of representing what's worth reading and watching on the web".
And, continuing the Chrome comparison, in a side-by-side view, Mozilla says the new Firefox is faster than Chrome. If you now rely on a traditional Firefox extension, you may want to hold off on updating until it's been converted to a modern WebExtension. If you use Firefox all the time - you're about to get just a little bit happier with your very smart choices in life.
The first ever Quantum-fueled Firefox version, Firefox 57, is about to land on your Windows, Linux, and macOS machines. The difference between desktop and mobile updates here is the speed.
The one thing I don't really like about Quantum is the browser's diminished UI gradients, as shown in the image above.
