Connecticut Supreme Court hears arguments in Newtown shooting case

Sandy Hook Families and Remington Arms Will Face Off in CT Supreme Court

Several Sandy Hook families took their case today against a gunmaker to Connecticut's highest court, saying Remington Arms is responsible for the massacre in Newtown.

Likewise, Koskoff told the CT court on Tuesday, Remington marketed its Bushmaster XM15-E2S directly at people like Adam Lanza - people whom the lawsuit describes as young men "obsessed with the military", specifically elite units like the Army Rangers, and "uninterested in hunting or target shooting" (italics in original). "Adam Lanza heard their message", Koskoff told the justices Tuesday.

The case centers on a Bushmaster AR-15-style rifle made by North Carolina-based Remington and a 2005 federal law that shields gun makers from liability in most cases.

A Bushmaster rifle lies on the ground at Sandy Hook Elementary School following the December 14, 2012, shooting rampage in an evidence photo released by Connecticut State Police.

Lawyers for the family members asked the court to revive the suit that was dismissed a year ago by Judge Barbara Bellis in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The rifle was bought by Lanza's mother, whom he also killed, as a gift for him or for the two of them to share, the lawsuit claims.

Cut-off date set to spend old £10 notes
After the March deadline the old notes will only be able to be exchanged at the Bank of England. A decision is yet to be made on whether new £50 notes will be issued in polymer.

Families of nine of the people killed and a survivor filed the suit against Remington, alleging that the gun maker violated state law by aggressively marketing a military-grade weapon for civilian use.

Josh Koskoff, an attorney for the Sandy Hook families, and other legal experts said the Remington suit is believed to be the first to have been filed under the gun law exception.

"The manufacturer and the sellers of the firearms used by the criminal that day are not legally responsible", Vogts said.

Josh Koskoff, lawyer for the victims' families, compared it to "the Ford Motor Company advertising a vehicle that can run over people" and said that kind of advertising attracts "dangerous users", including Lanza.

"The law needs to be applied dispassionately", said lawyer James Vogts, representing Remington on Tuesday.
