Texas State student confirmed dead University suspends Greek organizations

Following other colleges, Florida State University moved to indefinitely ban all fraternity and sorority activities until "a new normal for Greek Life at the university" is reached, according to a statement from John E. Thrasher, the university's president. Around the same time, Sigma Phi Epsilon adopted a substance free policy for all their fraternity facilities in the U.S.

Ellis passed away in his sleep November 13 off campus, following his fraternity's initiation.

University President Denise Trauth says the chapters won't be reinstated until a review is done of the entire fraternity and sorority system on campus.

Monday, Penn State was back in the spotlight after Centre Country District Attorney Stacy Parks Miller announced charges against 12 new Beta Theta Pi brothers following the February death of pledge Timothy Piazza. New member events, social functions and chapter meetings will not be allowed until student affairs completes a review of Greek life at the university. Following a call from friends, officers with the San Marcos Police Department found Matthew Ellis, a Phi Kappa Psi pledge, unresponsive on Monday morning at an apartment off campus.

The Texas State Police Department has offered to assist the San Marcos Police Department in the investigation into the events leading to Ellis' death. My thoughts are with his family, friends, and the Texas State Community.

As a result of this tragedy, I have suspended activities of all Greek fraternity and sorority chapters at Texas State.
