The second day of Major League Baseball's postseason awards held a lot more mystery than the first, as the Manager of the Year awards were handed out and all six finalists had a legit case for winning.
The advanced analytics movement that has swept over baseball, refining and altering perceptions of what makes hitters and pitches great, has nonetheless done little to aid in evaluating what makes a manager effective on an annual basis.
Torey Lovullo of the Arizona Diamondbacks has won the NL Manager of the Year award after his first full season as a big league skipper.
Roberts received five first-place votes while Black and Counsell received three apiece. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts finished second in the balloting while Rockies manager Bud Black finished third. Craig Counsell of the Milwaukee Brewers finished fourth and Dusty Baker, who was sacked by the Washington Nationals, finished fifth.
In his first season as a big-league manager, Lovullo, 52, guided the Diamondbacks to a 93-69 record despite playing an unbalanced schedule in a division that yielded three playoff teams. Houston Astros manager A.J. Hinch was the only other AL manager to receive a first-place vote.
Paul Molitor of the Minnesota Twins was named Lovullo's counterpart as the American League Manager of the Year.
"An award like this, it's certainly a reflection of the organization [and] the work my coaches and players put in", Molitor said on MLB Network. There was no sure-thing like when Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger won the Rookie of the Year awards.
Molitor, who just completed his third season in charge of the Twins, is a member of the Hall of Fame as a player.
