In the first such train collision in about 24 years, since 1993, a train heading in the direction of Tuas Link station stalled at Joo Koon station at 8.18am.
Twenty-three passengers and two Singapore Mass Rapid Transit train (SMRT) staff sustained "light to moderate injuries" and were taken to hospitals, the LTA said. "At 8.20am, the second train moved forward unexpectedly, and came into contact with the first train", they said in a joint statement here.
"Twenty-three injured passengers have already been conveyed to the hospitals, majority sustained minor injuries", SCDF added.
The worst glitches occurred in December 2011, delaying more than 200,000 people in the last weekend before the Christmas holiday, and led to the resignation of SMRT's chief executive officer at the time.
The platform at Joo Koon MRT Station has been partially cordoned off following a collision between two trains.
Others posted photos of the scene. Earlier on Wednesday, a commuter by the name of Mei Anne wrote on Facebook that the collision caused her and other passengers to fall on their backs.
Singapore's first train collision occurred August 5, 1993, when an east-bound train stopped longer than scheduled at a station due to a technical fault and was then hit by another train, according to the National Library Board's resources.
As at 1 pm, free bus services were being provided at regular intervals between the Tuas Link station and the Jurong East station where the Green line meets the North-South Line or the Red Line. "
"The Ministry of Transport, Land Transport Authority (LTA) and SMRT are in touch with these injured passengers to offer the necessary assistance.
