UC Browser gets delisted on Google Play Store for 'misleading' promotions

UC Browser has mysteriously disappeared from the Google Play Store

Hundreds of Android apps might be removed from the Google Play ...

Google seems to have taken down the UC Browser application from Play Store, although UC Web's other offering - the UC Browser Mini - is still available for download. There were complaints that even if a user has uninstalled it or deleted the browsing data, the browser retains control of the DNS of user's device.

A popular mobile application in India, UC Browser has been developed by the Alibaba Group-owned UC Web. The app, which is particularly popular in India, has been delisted from the app store for misleading and unhealthy promotions. The news report further adds that Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC) in Hyderabad is looking into the matter.

Android Authority notes that UC Browser mini, a, well, mini version of the app, is still available in the Android app store. Earlier this month, it was reported that the browser had crossed over 500 million downloads and the sixth most downloaded application in India on the Play store.

A top official in the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology in August said that the brand if found guilty of stealing data, the company may be banned in the country.

Hundreds of Android apps might be removed from the Google Play ...

There weren't that many browsers when Google released the first version of Android OS. As well as being a hugely popular alternative to Google Chrome in its home region, UC Browser has an enormous base in India. The browser is the go-to app for low-end Android phones.

UCWeb has also claimed that Indian users make up 100 million of its total monthly active users from around the world, with the latter figure reportedly reaching 420 million, per reports from 2016.

Many of the Reddit posters addressing UC Browser's unexpected disappearance seem to think that the recent allegations are to blame, as it had been thought that the app could be banned in India should the accusations hold any water.
