Facebook Messenger Goes Down/Offline Worldwide
Facebook said it consulted with 1,200 parents plus online security and child development specialists, including the National Parent-Teacher Association, the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, Connect Safely, Center on Media and Child Health, and Sesame Workshop. Messenger Kids has parental controls and policies in place to ban inappropriate content and cyberbullying, but that doesn't make the service exempt from Facebook's pattern of moderation failures or the broader evils of the interweb.
"When we heard about the need for better apps directly from parents during research and conversations with parents, we knew we needed to develop it alongside with the people who were going to use it, as well as experts who could help guide our thinking", Cheng said in a statement.
Facebook Kids is available in the USA now, initially for iOS devices only.
Parents approve all the friend requests.
Recognizing the relationship between parent and child, and that we take our responsibility and their trust in us seriously.
Facebook Messenger has stopped working, leaving millions of users worldwide unreachable via chat.
The Messenger Kids app, aimed at kids ages 6-12, rolled out Monday on iOS in the U.S. An Android version is coming soon.
Parents are often anxious about what their kids do on social media and whom they are talking to, especially Facebook. "This is by far the most clumsy part of Messenger Kids", TechCrunch reported.
The stand-alone app on children's devices can be controlled by a parent's Facebook account that will allow kids to use video chat and send photos, videos or text messages to friends approved by their parents. A dedicated support team will work 24/7 to address any flagged issues.
After that, parents have to provide their kid's name. Kids can also play around with augmented reality masks and stickers, including fidget spinners and dinosaur AR masks. Facebook promises it won't collect a lot of data about its users and will not allow them to make purchases.
