But despite all the success, Niantic has never forgotten about Ingress.
Ingress Prime has been redesigned with a new look, new AR features, and other improvements. The new game will debut in 2018.
For those who aren't familiar with the original Ingress, the game used location-based technology and AR to allow players to capture portals at various locations within their real-world environments, with teams playing as either the Enlightened faction or the Resistance faction.
It seems like players who are newly interested in this type of game are more likely to latch onto an existing strong IP like Pokemon or Harry Potter, but Niantic clearly isn't ready to give up on the world of Ingress just yet. New features integrate state-of-the-art augmented reality technology leveraging smartphone cameras to immerse players in the sci-fi world of Ingress. Launched in 2012, the game's been downloaded more than 20 million times, according to numbers provided by the developer. "Ingress is the foundation of our real-world gaming platform and showcases our ability to create in-game and live experiences that can be a force for positive change in communities worldwide".
The new version of the game will be such a large overhaul that the entire experience will be packaged together as a new title called Ingress Prime. It's unclear if Ingress Prime or the Harry Potter game will arrive first, but either way, Niantic is primed for another big year in 2018.
While Niantic also says there will be a massive new story arc for new and old players, current Ingress players will keep all their previous progression like levels and items in Ingress Prime.
Ingress Prime will be available for iPhone, iPad and Android in 2018.
