Singapore issues advisory on Dengvaxia dengue vaccine

WHO denies recommending Dengvaxia for nat'l immunization programs

The WHO Country Office said it had acknowledged in "mid-April 2016 that these conditions appeared to be met in the 3 regions of the Philippines in which the dengue vaccination effort was already ongoing at that time - noting that the decision to roll out the vaccine had been taken by the DOH before WHO's advice became available".

On Nov. 29, the company disclosed that it would ask global health regulators to restrict use of its much-touted dengue vaccine to only people who have previously been infected by the virus.

The manufacturer of a dengue fever vaccine that was suspended in the Philippines after a new study showed a greater risk of severe cases in people without previous infection said yesterday it is working with authorities to address fears and share the new information.

According to United Kingdom public broadcaster the BBC, Sanofi said in a press conference in Manila on Monday that there had been no reported deaths related to its dengue vaccine in the Philippines.

De Guzman also confirmed "there were no recipients of the Dengvaxia vaccine in Pangasinan" because of lower dengue cases past year compared with other places in the country.

Philippine health officials have ordered Sanofi to jerk its dengue vaccine off the market as the controversy over the health threat it poses to children continues to roil the country.

As of November 2017, about 733,713 Filipino children have been given the anti-dengue vaccine.

The Department of Health has recommended that she be moved to a Manila hospital for closer monitoring, but Bayugo said she had shown signs of improvement with her platelet count recovering.

The Philippines was the first country in Asia to approve the Dengvaxia vaccine for individuals aged 9 and 45 years old in 2015. But even recent more modest analysts' sales forecasts are now looking unattainable given the safety issue and clinical evidence revealing unequal protection against different strains of dengue.

Most sales have come from the Philippines through its government immunization program, and Brazil, where the state of Parana has seen a three-fold increase in dengue in the past few years.

Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral infection found in tropical and subtropical climates worldwide.
