Samsung starts cranking out 512GB eUFS storage

Samsung's new 512GB eUFS V-NAND storage

Imagine pairing a ton of storage alongside Qualcomm's Snapdragon 845 system-on-chip (SoC), or Samsung's recently announced Exynos 9810 (Samsung typically uses two SoCs for its flagship phones, tapping its own silicon for models that ship internationally and Qualcomm's hardware for USA variants). This year, flagships have moved to the UFS 2.1 standard which brings even higher storage performance.

Given the timing of the announcement, it is only a matter of time before manufacturers adopt the 512GB eUFS solution into their products especially in mobile devices.

The new 512GB UFS device consists of eight 64-layer 512-gigabit V-NAND chips stacked together with a controller chip. However, the inclusion of half a terabyte of onboard storage would undoubtedly push up the price of the phone, given that the 256GB version of Galaxy Note8 topped $1,000.

Nifty holds on to 10100-mark ahead of RBI decision
Telecom, Bankex and oil & gas indices closed higher by 0.83 per cent, 0.38 per cent and 0.16 per cent, respectively. Among the sectoral indices on BSE, power and metal indices slipped 1.06 per cent and 0.85 per cent.

With Samsung's new 512GB eUFS storage, the South Korean company will soon be able to manufacture smartphones or tablets that have built-in flash storage that's the same as or even more than some desktop or laptop computers.

To maximize the performance and energy efficiency of the new 512GB eUFS, Samsung has introduced a new set of proprietary technologies. In addition, the 512GB eUFS' controller chip speeds up the mapping process for converting logical block addresses to those of physical blocks. With its sequential read and writes reaching up to 860 megabytes per second (MB/s) and 255MB/s respectively, the 512GB embedded memory enables transferring a 5GB-equivalent full HD video clip to an SSD in about six seconds, over eight times faster than a typical microSD card. This will improve the speed of storage-intensive tasks such as high-resolution burst photos, file searches, and downloading videos in dual app mode, the company states. However, if the company starts using this storage module, we may be facing the prospects of losing the microSD card slot.

Some tablets, including the iPad Pro and Microsoft's Surface tablets, already offer 512GB of space for media content. Samsung says its new solution slims down the chips so that the increased storage capacity takes up the same amount of space as a 256GB chip would.
