Amazon Prime

Singapore customers will be able to enjoy Prime benefits including exclusive access to free two-hour delivery on orders over S$40 with thousands of items and unlimited free worldwide shipping on orders above S$60 on more than five million items from Amazon US, which can be ordered through the Prime Now App.

Under the previous ordinance, AmazonGlobal program, every Singaporeans could enjoy free shipping for buying qualifying goods worth at least USD$125.

Speaking to The Straits Times, Mr Ghani acknowledged that some living in the country already have Amazon Prime memberships for the U.S. site.

Now that they have made it accessible for Singaporeans, members get to watch shows on its award-winning Amazon Prime Originals like the highly-anticipated second season of The Grand Tour, which will premiere on 8 December. But for a limited period, it will go for $2.99 a month, although Amazon did not specify for how long.

The launch of Amazon Prime comes just after the company ended its Free AmazonGlobal Saver Shipping option to Singapore on Monday, which enabled shoppers here to get free global shipping with a minimum order of US$125.

In July, the e-commerce giant made its biggest push into Southeast Asia by launching a free two-hour delivery service in the city-state, marking its first head-on battle with Chinese rival Alibaba Group Holding.

Economic growth slower than expected
The biggest fall in the September quarter was in agriculture, forestry and fishing, which declined by 4.1 per cent. This was the result of stronger business investment and construction, especially engineering construction.

However, this does mean the previously free Prime Now service is gone, and users will have to subscribe to Prime if they even want to make a purchase locally, unlike local rivals Redmart and Honestbee, which do not require a subscription to order products such as diapers or groceries.

Customers who do not have a Prime membership in the USA can, however, enjoy free delivery within the country for orders totalling US$25 or more on eligible items.

Speaking about the launch of Amazon Prime, Jamil Ghani, vice-president of Amazon Prime International, said, "Prime membership is created to offer the best of Amazon". Though everything points to an eventual local Amazon online store, he remained mum about their plans.

"We have been very encouraged by the strong response and adoption of Prime Now over the last several months", he added. "We will keep making Prime better, adding even more selection and benefits".

Prime membership is country-specific and not transferable, he added, meaning that those with US Prime memberships can not convert them to local ones.
