NEW: Here's How Much the Special Counsel Has Cost So Far
Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation cost $3.2 million in the first five months, according to Justice Department records released Tuesday. The office said those expenses would have been incurred "irrespective of the existence of the SCO".
According to Mueller'sreport, the special counsel's office spent about $1.7 million for salaries and benefits and more than $223,000 for travel-related expenses.
The combined $6.7 million spent by Mueller's office and other offices supporting his investigation only covers the special counsel's investigation, not the various congressional investigations of Russia's meddling in the election.
Equipment acquisitions marks the second-highest expense, coming in at more than $733,000, followed by costs for rent and utilities, travel and transportation, and contractual services.
The spending, compiled by Mueller's office, was released by the Justice Department on Tuesday and covers the period from May 17 through September 30.
The rest was spent on the relocation of Justice employees temporarily assigned to the expanding investigation, the report showed. Another report will be filed in six months.
That analysis also found that Mueller's investigation is accelerating more rapidly than previous inquiries. Manafort and Gates have entered not guilty pleas in defense of a number of business related charges.
It's hard to make comparisons to other investigations led by specially designated prosecutors or to draw conclusions about how much Mueller will ultimately spend.
Mueller incorporated several active investigations within the Justice Department, including those of Trump campaign contacts with Russian Federation, former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort's business activities and former national security adviser Michael Flynn. Papadopoulos and Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
In its report, Mueller's team notes that it draws its funding from a revolving "permanent, indefinite" appropriation for independent counsels provided by Congress, as well as from non-reimbursed Justice Department agency expenditures and from intelligence agency appropriations.
Mueller's spending was detailed in a report obtained by The Associated Press, which was later released to the public by the special counsel's office.
