McConnell's statement came a day after the House announced a plan to pass another continuing resolution in order to extend federal funding through December 22 as the current stopgap measure approaches the December 8 deadline.

"We´re glad the White House has reached out and asked for a second meeting", Schumer and Pelosi said.

Navy Vice Adm. Andrew Lewis, deputy chief of naval operations for operations; Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Brian Beaudreault, deputy commandant for plans, policies and operations; and Cary Russell, director of the Government Accountability Office's defense capabilities and management team; testified during the House subpanel hearing.

Trump had been scheduled to meet Schumer and Pelosi last week but they skipped the talks after the president tweeted preemptively that he did not expect them to come to an agreement. But they will need some Democratic support to get the spending bill past Senate procedural hurdles that require 60 votes, since there are only 52 Republicans in the 100-member chamber.

Congressional leaders hope to use the two weeks afforded by the stopgap spending bill to work out an overall deal and attach it to another short-term spending bill that would be needed by December 22 to continue federal spending into January. Pelosi said on Twitter that Trump "now knows that his verbal abuse will no longer be tolerated". Even so, top Republicans expressed confidence that they'd approve the short-term measure this week, with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., saying, "We will pass it before the end of the week".

"We hope the president will go into this meeting with an open mind, rather than deciding that an agreement can't be reached beforehand", the Democrats said Monday in a written statement. He said Democrats are in an "untenable position" if they push the immigration issue to the point of a government shutdown.

There was no other officer in the vehicle at the time of the shooting and authorities are not looking for any other suspects. Arnold Police Chief Robert Shockey says the shooting took place during the ride from the gas station to the police station.

With the budget chafing under spending caps imposed by a 2011 bipartisan budget deal, Democrats want defense and domestic programs to get equal funding increases. Also on the agenda would be other year-end matters, including protection from deportation for undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S.as children, hurricane disaster aid and an extension of the expired Children's Health Insurance Program.

In addition, some from both parties want to restore billions in federal payments to health insurers that Trump halted last autumn.

White House spokesman Raj Shah and a spokesman for McConnell confirmed Thursday's meeting.

McConnell said Sunday that a CHIP extension and disaster aid would be addressed in a spending bill before December 22, but not immigration. Democrats would likely win less for nondefense agencies.

"As we wait for the House to take the next steps, I encourage my colleagues on the Senate to review the legislation". They have modest differences over items like whether to reduce or fully repeal the tax on the most expensive estates.
