Fueled by high winds, the blaze dubbed the Creek fire was reported at 3:42 a.m. near Gold Creek and Little Tujunga roads, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department, which was assisting the U.S. Forest Service and the Los Angeles Fire Department in battling the flames. The ongoing Creek Fire in the Sylmar area has scorched more than 11,000 acres.
At least four homes were destroyed, Mayor Eric Garcetti told reporters. Winds were about 15 miles per hour. It is a bypass auxiliary route of Interstate 5, running along the southern and western parts of the Greater Los Angeles Area from Irvine in the south to near San Fernando in the north. More than 600 firefighters battled the blaze amid strong Santa Ana winds, some gusting at 70 miles per hour. Terrazas urged people to monitor news broadcasts and social media, including www.LAFD.org.
Large animals were ordered to evacuate at Hansen Dam Equestrian Center, Pierce College and the Los Angeles Equestrian Center. The 405 Freeway in Bentwood has been closed as crews try to tend to the blaze.
The Foothill (210) Freeway was closed in both directions between the Golden State (5) Freeway on the west and the Glendale (2) Freeway and wasn't expected to be reopened until at least Wednesday morning.
The Skirball fire was reported at 4:50 a.m. and was more than an acre when the first units arrived.
