Customs and Border Protection reports 'dramatic' increase in US demand for fentanyl

Ten months after President Trump took office, the effect of his toughened immigration policies is showing up: The number of people caught at the southwest border has declined, while arrests of immigrants inside the country surged by 40%, statistics released Tuesday showed.

ICE said that in Colorado and Wyoming, 2,746 people were arrested and 2,535 were removed from the U.S.in the 2017 fiscal year, which ran from October 1 of last year through September 30 of this year.

According to numbers from ICE, federal immigration authorities deported fewer illegal immigrants in 2017 than in 2016, even as they arrested far more people suspected of being in the United States illegally.

The data also shows a large drop in border apprehensions. Arrests were up 20 percent over the same period, from 2,284 in 2016.

President Donald Trump's controversial 'travel ban' is a DON DEAL
If anything, it said, the government's case has weakened. "But the justification for that dramatic relief has only weakened". Lawyers for Hawaii , which is challenging the ban, told the justices that there was no reason to make changes now.

Border Patrol also says its agents have experienced a rise in assaults: According to their data, employees with the agency were assaulted 847 times, compared to less than 600 each year going back to 2012.

Customs and Border Protection reported Tuesday that authorities have seen a dramatic increase in fentanyl because of US demand as well as their ability to detect it. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman Matthew Bourke said in a statement that the country's active crackdown and cheapness of the drug have contributed to the change.

But Culberson County Sheriff Oscar Carrillo, who was present at the scene of the reported "attack", recently told the Dallas Morning News that the injured Border Patrol agents might have been struck by a truck.
