Final vote on same sex marriage bill looms

Debate on proposed amendments dragged on in the House of Representatives throughout the day, but in the end it was passed without any changes.

Turnbull, a gay marriage supporter, says he wants wedding celebrants, not just those affiliated with churches, to have the right to refuse to officiate at same-sex marriages.

Drafting such measures into the Australian bill would delay it, but several gay marriage opponents have told Parliament this week they would not stand in the way of marriage equality because the Australian public clearly supported it in a recent postal ballot.

Less then four MPs voted no on the Bill, which is set to become law in days after it goes to the Governor-General, reported ABC News.

Under political pressure to find a solution, the ruling Liberal National Coalition government announced the non-compulsory survey in August, saying if the result was "yes" they would allow a free vote in Parliament.

The government has appointed a panel to examine how to safeguard religious freedoms once gay marriage was a reality in Australia.

"There's only one thing left to do: Ryan Patrick Bolger, will you marry me?"

"This is a great day, it belongs to every Australian".

It follows years of campaigning from the Australian LGBTIQ community and dozens of failed attempts to change the law.

There had been little doubt that this bill would pass with sweeping support from Nationals, Liberals, Greens, the crossbench and Labor.

The Marriage Amendment (Definition and Religious Freedoms) Bill 2017 was voted xx to xx in favor of legalizing marriage equality.

"This Parliament, when we passed the marriage equality law, is not a gift from us to LGBTIQ Australians, equality is never a gift to be given".

A nonbinding postal survey found that 62 percent of Australian respondents wanted gay marriage to be legal.

Many parliamentarians bared their personal history and pains in the lower house.
