Chrome Apps are dead, as Google shuts down the Chrome Web Store section
Google sees PWAs as the future, thanks to their superior offline capabilities, efficiency, and uniformity across platforms, but they're functionally similar to Chrome Apps, which are somewhat unintuitive by comparison. While Chrome Apps have now disappeared from discovery, they can still be downloaded with a direct link. As the web giant focuses on extensions and web apps, Chrome Apps are no longer available to download on the Chrome Web Store.
More than a year after the announcement, Google Chrome is finally pulling the plug on its "Apps" section from the Chrome Web Store on Mac, Windows, and Linux platforms.
If you're wondering whether you'll miss out on much, don't worry: as Ars Technica noted, many Apps were essentially little more than bookmarks for webpages, with the added benefit of being able to access them from various parts of Chrome's interface. Google hasn't announced anything yet for Chrome OS, but it's likely that Chrome apps might go away, too. All Chrome Apps that have already been installed on Chrome browsers will also cease to function sometime in early 2018. Existing apps will continue to work and receive updates. Chromebooks are already capable of running some Android apps and apps on the Chrome browser would seem redundant. "Another update will be posted here when a new date for the Chrome Apps EOL on Windows, Mac, and Linux has been finalized". PWAs can work across multiple browsers even on mobile devices, and can deliver an app-like experience to desktop websites. Because of this, other companies are jumping on the PWA bandwagon: it works on Samsung Android phones in the Samsung browser, Firefox on Android, and Opera on Android.
