Lake effect snow and colder temperatures to stay in place for a while
State officials are warning that travel on the state Thruway could be treacherous when powerful lake-effect snow hits the western portion of the state on Wednesday. In addition, we do see clouds and a little moisture setting up in far southern OH, south of US 50, and that can bring some minor snows as well.
Heavy lake-effect snow will affect the Great Lakes, including the Buffalo metro area.
A strong low pressure system developing right overhead will bring more snow to the area Friday night into Saturday.
By Wednesday evening, the winds will begin to shift to a more westerly direction, allowing for the plume of lake-effect snow to be directed to areas east of Lake Erie in Lake Ontario.
Additional Eastern Snow Chances Ahead?
Temperatures will fall into the low-mid 30s tomorrow afternoon and continue well below average for the rest of the week and into the weekend
Much colder air has moved into the state and will park here for a while.
There are also chances for snow in other parts of the East this week, though a major storm is not in the forecast at this time. In fact, if the current moisture projections hold, we could see several inches in spots from I-70 northward next week. Wednesday, we keep isolated snow but temperatures drop like a rock. Coverage will be almost 80% of areas from I-70 northward on Monday.
Monday night: Mostly cloudy, low around 21. Last but not least, the more south you go you'll have more sun in places like the Upper Valley and southern Vermont; highs will be in the 30s to near 40°. This is just a cold pattern, and the cold is leading to better chances of light snow. The action is gone rather quickly, and we should see sunshine and cold air again for next Friday. Winds will become northwest and remain brisk today, coming in around 10-20 miles per hour.
In the extended period, we still see nothing spectacular until we get closer to the 18th and 19th.
