NOW it's official: Lupe is running for governor

Democrat Lupe Valdez announced her candidacy for Texas governor on Dec. 6 2017
Democrat Lupe Valdez, who has resigned as Dallas County sheriff and declared her candidacy for governor of Texas, often underscores her family's background as migrant farm workers.
Observers at this city's paper of record and elsewhere have reckoned that if Valdez can help mobilize Hispanic voters, sort of the sleeping giant of Texas politics, while boosting down-ticket candidates, then that may be a consolation prize to mounting a credible challenge to Republicans' statewide dominance in 2018. Valdez is easily the most high-profile Democrat to throw her hat in the ring for 2018-Democrats couldn't talk either of the Castros, Dallas representative Rafael Anchia, or actor Eva Longoria into what is likely to be a doomed campaign-and the all but certain victor of her party's primary. Valdez's campaign said she will "officially notify" Dallas County commissioners of her decision to run for governor this morning.
Lately, however, she seemed to care less about being transparent or cultivating the media.
Valdez will resign as sheriff to run for governor.
"I think his best bet is trying to force a runoff against Valdez", said Jones, "which is quite feasible given the presence of several other candidates such as Jeff Payne and Tom Wakely in the race". "Abbott may have the money - we're going to have the people".
That move prompted Abbott to warn Valdez in a letter that Texas sheriffs who did not cooperate with federal "detainers" would face losing state grant money.
Abbott has no serious GOP primary challenger and already has more than $50 million in his reelection war chest, his campaign aides say.
Abbott's campaign had no immediate reaction to Valdez's candidacy.
Valdez brushed off the endorsement, suggesting to reporters that it does not reflect the view of the full membership of the association.
"For the Dreamers, if this isn't their country, they don't have a country", Valdez said.
According to the Dallas Morning News, Valdez also battled with Abbott in 2015 over jail protocol when she refused to hold immigrants who committed minor offenses for more than 48 hours after their original release date.
"I'm interested in open borders, sanctuary cities and California", her profile reads.
