The scarcity of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol, worsened in some filling stations in parts of Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) yesterday as panic buying and long queues forced the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Dr. Maikanti Baru, back from an overseas' trip.

In Onitsha, the commercial city, most of the petrol stations visited had no queues but were selling at N150, while some sold at N155 per litre.

But the NNPC said they are importing about 100 percent of petroleum products adding that there is sufficient supply across board.

Similarly, motorists who bought petrol from the Ascon station along the IBB Way in Wuse, said they spent an average of 30 minutes to get in and out of the station with petrol in their tanks.

In Katsina, queues were observed in many filling stations in the metropolis yesterday morning but by late evening, the queues had disappeared.

The NNPC boss was scheduled to receive the Forbes Oil and Gas Man of the Year Award 2017, on Tuesday.

Addressing the fuel scarcity resurgence on Tuesday, Baru guaranteed Nigerians that the NNPC was on top of the situation. When I said that independent marketers need the product most, I'm talking in relation to numbers of marketers that are members of IPMAN.

The state oil company, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), said rumours that pump prices would increase in the run-up to Christmas had contributed to the increased demand for petrol.

It noted that the corporation had enough stock of fuel to ensure seamless supply and distribution of products across the country.

Marafa stated the Senate would not allow some unpatriotic persons to cause Nigerians any hardships especially during the Yuletide.

"However, given the seriousness of the matter, we made a decision to invite the GMD to come and brief on the development and to enable Nigerians know the situation of things".

"Right now, we are having a total shortage of products because we are not getting supply from our depots". We will not stop at that.

Marafa said the committee will also embark on oversight of filling stations across the country to check cases of fuel hoarding by petrol dealers.
