Fears of a North Korean missile accidentally obliterating a passenger plane during one of Kim Jong Un's unannounced, uncoordinated rocket launches prompted at least one airline to change its flight course this year, a spokesperson told Fox News on Thursday.
Cathay Pacific said the crew of a flight from San Francisco to Hong Kong reported seeing what they thought was the missile re-entering Earth's atmosphere on November 29.
Singapore Airlines changed a flight route between South Korea and the U.S. earlier this year over fears about North Korean missile launches in the Asia-Pacific region, it has emerged. That aircraft was crossing the Sea of Japan (the East Sea, as it's known in the Koreas) on a flight arriving to Incheon from Los Angeles. According to the report, the best chance the USA has in intercepting a ballistic missile is when it is on, or leaving the launch pad.
Minutes later, the pilot of another Korean Air plane reported seeing a similar flash of light, airline spokesman Cho Hyun-mook said, as cited by AP.
Japan is preparing to acquire precision air-launched missiles that for the first time would give it the capability to strike North Korean missile sites, two sources with direct knowledge of the matter said earlier this week.
Cathay said there was no current plan to change air routes, saying its plane was "far from the event location".
In the case of the latest launch of the Hwasong-15, which experts say can strike anywhere in the USA with a nuclear payload, North Korea used a mobile stand possibly to avoid detection, according to Panda. "We remain alert and [will] review the situation as it evolves".
It also claimed the missile is capable of hitting the entire U.S. mainland. The French airline expanded its no-fly zone over North Korea as a result.
