CES: Samsung and Harman unveil new automotive solution

Samsung reveals 5G connected car plans, including Harman-developed Telematics Control Unit

"In a vehicle, the human brain is constantly performing incredibly complex calculations while driving", said John Absmeier, SVP of Autonomous/ADAS Strategic Business Unit at HARMAN and VP of Smart Machines for Samsung Electronics.

Each new solution was made possible through the HARMAN-Samsung alliance that leverages Samsung's global scale, R&D capabilities, dominance in mobile/TV/semiconductors and distribution channels and HARMAN's leading connected auto heritage, relationships, market knowledge and growing community of innovation partners. Samsung wants the world to know they manufacture more than phones and televisions.

They demonstrated the system by integrating it into a Maserati luxury vehicle during a press briefing on January 11 at Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas on the sidelines of the CES.

Weather: Flood warnings as Storm Eleanor batters Britain's coast
The unsafe conditions could lead to injuries and a danger of life, as materials and objects go flying. High tides and large waves means there is a risk of flooding, said the Environment Agency.

The digital cockpit has a premium configuration with ecosystem of connected lifestyle across the Internet of Things. The new cockpit will make use of 5G technology and also Samsung's IoT platform. Through a multi-display layout that leverages HARMAN's Ignite Platform, the in-car user experience can be personalized for the driver and passenger via services such as virtual personal assistants, portable profiles, augmented reality and more.

Samsung has announced its DRVLINE autonomous driving platform. Based on the platform, the two companies said they would continue to focus on engineering, high-performance computing, sensor technologies, algorithms, artificial intelligence, and cloud and connectivity solutions. The jointly-developed system includes a forward facing camera that incorporates forward collision warning, pedestrian warning, lane departure warning and adaptive cruise control.

"Drvline is a platform that can help us to work with our partners for safer, better autonomous driving". While many other self-driving vehicle platforms keep its software out of reach from outside companies, Harman is taking a different road with DRVLINE, hoping to find the fast lane by letting outside companies develop products and services for it. It also teased that it has "already signed with a leading European automaker" as the first customer for the solution; the identity of that automaker will be revealed at Samsung's and Harman's CES booths. In other words, TCU will serve as an individual car's connection point to the larger traffic network.
