Parents of Vt. Prosecutor Busted Again on Drug Charges

Barbara Jiron was arrested with her husband.

Contact with the couple raised the officer's suspicions, who ordered a drug-detecting dog deployed.

The Lincoln Journal Star reports the 80-year-old Patrick Jiron and his 70-year-old wife were arrested Tuesday along Interstate-80 in northeast Nebraska.

Lancaster County sheriff's deputies stopped the couple's westbound pickup truck, saying it was following another vehicle too closely, said Sheriff's Sgt. Jason Mayo.

Deputies searched the truck and found about $18,000 in cash, according to the World-Herald.

The couple said they were coming from California and planned to give the weed as Christmas presents to friends and family in Boston and Vermont.

The couple's son, JustinJjiron, is a criminal prosecutor in the state of Vermont.

Wagner said Patrick, 83, and Barbara Jiron, 80, were taken to jail on charges of possession of money while violating the state's narcotics statutes.

Mayo told KOLN that the seized cash tested positive for marijuana residue, as did a 50-gallon trash bag found in the truck.

The couple now faces multiple violations of California law related to marijuana cultivation and transportation, the Sheriff's Office said. They told police the individually wrapped bags of cannabis, worth about $336,000, were Christmas gifts.

Mariah Jiron, who is their daughter, was issued a warning.

The sheriff's department says the Jiron's were also driving the same Toyota pickup involved in their previous bust.

The Jirons are facing felony charges of possession of marijuana with the intent to deliver and no drug tax stamp, as Nebraska requires marijuana dealers to purchase a drug tax stamp from its Department of Revenue as evidence that the state's drug tax has been paid.

They were arrested then eventually released on bond and were due in court the following day.

At the time of their arrest in York County, right before Christmas, investigators said the elderly couple told them they didn't know it was illegal to transport marijuana in Nebraska.
