The Miss America Organization, declaring "a new direction" in the wake of an email scandal, gave oversight positions to four pageant winners Monday, including former Miss AmericaKate Shindle from South Jersey. Now, for the first time in the pageant's almost 100-year history, a former Miss America will take the helm.
"This has not been easy for anyone who loves this program", Carlson said in a statement.
"In the end, we all want a strong, relevant Miss America", she said.
Days earlier, she had criticised proposals to bring in former contestants to the board, claiming: "This new tactic pays lip service to groups of stakeholders, while guaranteeing that the majority of the current board will stay on".
Hagan and Shindle were subjects of the offensive emails.
Ms Carlson was crowned Miss America in 1989. "As she continues to destroy her own credibility, her voice will attract less and less notice while she continues her descent to an unhappy pathetic footnote".
Most previously serving Directors have resigned from the Board. He also resented Carlson's criticism of the organization, pushing board members to do things that would "drive Gretchen infuckingsane".
The news site initially quoted the Miss America Organization as saying it was notified about the emails months earlier and fired a telecast writer - the "most egregious author of inappropriate comments".
Haskell, Haddad and several other board members resigned after the emails became public.
The controversy cost the pageant its television production partner and raised questions about the future of the nationally televised broadcast from Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall the week after Labor Day each year.
