In 1965, it struck a deal with South Korea when the two nations normalised ties to completely settle all civilian-related issues, including the comfort women and requisitioned workers during the war.

Abe's six-day tour will also take him to the two other Baltic countries, Latvia and Lithuania, as well as Bulgaria, Serbia and Romania, making him the first Japanese prime minister to visit those countries.

"We have noticed relevant reports", spokesperson Lu Kang said at a regular news briefing, stressing that China's stance on the comfort women issue remains consistent and clear.

His remarks came after President Moon Jae-in on Wednesday also called the 2015 deal "unsatisfactory" and demanded Japan accept historical truth and offer a honest apology to the victims in a nationally televised press conference.

"I want to confirm our cooperation on North Korean and other urgent issues the global community faces", Abe told reporters before he left.

Rich Hobson, longtime Roy Moore aide, announces run for Congress
Jones made clear during his campaign - his first run for elected office - that he wanted to find "common ground" with Republicans. Traditionally, a new senator would be escorted to their swearing-in ceremony by their Senate colleague from their home state.

"It is a universal principle that bilateral agreements are followed", Mr Abe told reporters in his first public comments since the issue flared up again this week.

The two countries signed the deal on December 28, 2015, to "finally and irreversibly" settle the comfort women issue, which has always been a key source of tension between the two countries.

"We have been honest in executing every promise we made". Japan has strongly maintained that the 2015 deal was* an official apology, and that the issue has been settled by the landmark agreement. Follow-up measures for victims of Japan's sexual enslavement, which the Korean government called for, are likely to be discussed during the meeting. "We can not accept South Korea's unilateral demands for additional measures". Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said his participation in the games would depend on his parliamentary schedule.

The agreement was finalised by now-ousted president Park Geun-Hye under pressure from Washington in the face of mounting security threats from North Korea.
