Padres Reportedly Offer Eric Hosmer 7-Year Contract

Fantasy Baseball Breaking News

Bob Nightengale, who yesterday reported that the San Diego Padres have made a seven-year contract offer to free agent first baseman Eric Hosmer, today reports that Hosmer's old team, the Royals, have made him an offer too.

The contract offers for seven years are equal to the deals that Jacoby Ellsbury signed for $153 million and Chris Davis signed for $161 million over the past couple of years.

Nightengale says that the Royals offer is for $1 million more per year than the Padres offer, which Nightengale now says is worth $140 million.

According to USA Today, Hosmer's representatives received a seven-year, $147 million offer from the Royals, the only team Hosmer has played for in his career. Hosmer is probably the most athletic first baseman in baseball and has become one of the most coveted assets at the position.

In some ways, the Royals' pursuit of Hosmer comes at a peculiar time.

However, the St. Louis Cardinals are still looking to add and Hosmer potentially could be a fit there as well.

With the farm system the focus, the Royals appeared willing to walk away from Moustakas and Cain.

Hosmer, 28, is a former third overall pick.

The Royals, though, are set to see a sizable increase in team revenue when their current under-market local television contract expires in 2019. The club is seeking to trim payroll to close to $110 million or $115 million after carrying club-record payrolls in 2016 and 2017.

Hosmer developed a reputation as a leader on the Royals during their consecutive World Series appearances in 2014 and '15.
