They filed a lawsuit Wednesday against the Department of Justice and special counsel Robert Mueller alleging that the Mueller investigation is going beyond the limits of exploring connections between Russian Federation and the Donald Trump presidential campaign.

President Donald Trump's former campaign manager Paul Manafort sued Special Counsel Robert Mueller on Wednesday (Jan 3), alleging that his office's wide-ranging investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation exceeded its legal authority and needed to be reined in.

The suit got Wednesday US District Court in Washington, where Manafort and another previous Trump battle associate are charged, challenges Mueller's choice to accuse Manafort of asserted violations that they say have nothing to do with the 2016 crusade, yet rather identify with lucrative campaigning work Manafort and his appointee improved the situation a previous Russia-accommodating government in Ukraine.

The lawsuit, which was filed in the United States District Court in Washington, D.C., names the DOJ, Acting Attorney General Rod Rosenstein and Mueller.

While Mueller's appointment order lets him pursue "any matters that arose or may arise directly from the investigation", his prosecutors improperly built a case that had nothing to do with Russian meddling, according to the complaint.

Manafort and his business partner Rick Gateswere indicted by a federal grand jury in October on 12 counts, including conspiracy to launder money and failure to register as a foreign agent, for their work as lobbyists on behalf of a Ukranian political party.

He said he asked Mr. Rosenstein if he granted Mr. Mueller authority to investigate Mr. Manafort for issues not related to Russian Federation, but he received no reply.

Turkey summons top U.S. envoy over Syrian Kurds
Wednesday's move was not the first time Turkey has announced its displeasure with the U.S. about the issue. Kosnett is the most senior USA diplomat in Ankara after the departure Ambassador John Bass in late 2017.

It also says that Manafort met in 2014 with the Justice Department and the FBI in the government's investigation of his client, former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, ousted amid street protests that year.

A DOJ spokesperson responded with a statement, saying: "The lawsuit is frivolous but the defendant is entitled to file whatever he wants".

Those efforts evoke the scandals of President Bill Clinton's administration and his White House's attempt to portray the independent counsel, Kenneth W. Starr, as a partisan who had run amok.

Special Counsel. The charged conduct does not relate to the specific matter designated in the Appointment Order, nor did it arise from the Special Counsel's investigation. On August 3, a lead prosecutor told Manafort's then-lawyer that Mueller was authorized to prosecute Manafort for tax crimes committed in 2010, the lawsuit said.

Here's a look at Mueller's rights as special counsel. "The investigation focused on the activities of a former Ukraine president and was closed soon after Mr Manafort's interview". He further discussed his offshore banking activity in Cyprus. He says prosecutors overstepped their bounds by charging him for conduct he says is unrelated to Russian interference in the 2016 USA presidential election.

Prosecutors believe that both men moved more than $75 million (?62.4 million) through offshore accounts, while Manafort launched more than $18 million (?15 million). Many House Republicans say that the special counsel's probe is tainted by political bias and that it will never give Trump a fair shake.
