NFL Wild Card Playoffs: Sunday games, TV, live scoreboard, updates
The Carolina Panthers have come under fire after quarterbackCam Newton returned to Sunday's game after seemingly being knocked out - without being put through the NFL's newly-enhanced concussion protocol.
The Panthers were investigated once before in the 2016 season opener at Denver when Newton took a blow to the head but remained in the game.
"I guess, in a way, yeah, you get an opportunity (for revenge), but we've got to treat it like any other game". "Just trust me on this".
There simply can not have been many times during Brees's tenure in New Orleans that he has seen an opposing defense use such a stop-the-run strategy, particularly in a game of such significance.
Newton was hit in the head by New Orleans Saints defensive tackle David Onyemata with about nine minutes to go in the game and then fell to the ground as he attempted to jog off the field.
"No, it's not mine, but I have been drinking it for years. I thought somebody had stuck their finger in my eye, but I have my visor so that couldn't happen".
"I just have to be better", he added. At that point, Adrian Peterson was still their starting tailback; since an early-season trade sent him to Arizona, tailbacks Alvin Kamara and Mark Ingram have become the first running back duo to each top 1,500 yards from scrimmage in a single season.
The comeback bid began to fizzle when Jordan induced an intentional grounding penalty on Newton, making it third-and-25 on the Saints 34 and a requiring 10-second runoff that left 20 seconds on the clock.
After the Saints beat the Panthers 31-26 on Sunday and eliminated Carolina from the playoffs, Jordan was asked about Newton and his performance in the locker room.
Remarkable. I'd like to nominate Ted Ginn Jr. and Josh Hill for the 'Unlikeliest Saints Playoff Heroes Hall of Fame.' Guys like Brian Milne, Willie Jackson, and Robert Wilson are founding members.
"'Find your matchups and let's go make some plays.' And that's what we were able to do". The 46-yard throw to Michael Thomas to set up the Saints final touchdown was incredible. "We wanted [Newton] to sit down to give [Anderson] a chance to warm up", Rivera said.
Newton appeared to undergo some testing on the sidelines, but re-entered the game on the next drive.
We have some NFC divisional playoff action on tap Sunday afternoon, as the New Orleans Saints face off against the Minnesota Vikings in an National Football League matchup. "We knew what we had to do and it was on the receivers". He was taken to the locker room and ruled out with a concussion.
This isn't the first time the former league MVP's handling for a possible concussion on a national stage has come under fire.
From his perspective, without the red zone shortcomings, one call wouldn't have carried so much weight.
"Had half of those been touchdowns, we'd be sitting in a different spot", Jordan said. Thomas had eight catches for 131 yards, while Ginn caught four passes for 115 yards, including an 80-yard touchdown against Carolina. [Former Saints assistant coach] Joe Vitt probably had one of the best sayings way back when he said, 'You win a Super Bowl, you walk together forever.' And we accomplished that, and you feel like there's a brotherhood that will always be there.
The hopes for that drive were quickly dashed, however, when Newton was sacked on second down - and it felt like the hopes for the game hung in the balance. So, Newton was checked on by Panthers trainers and was cleared to play even showing symptoms before coming off the field. Panthers coachRon Rivera offered a similar explanation.
The NFL is "in contact now with the Panthers' medical staff and we will not comment further until those conversations are complete", a spokesman said Sunday night, via NFL Media's Ian Rapoport.
The Saints (12-5) rebounded from double-digit losses to the Vikings and New England Patriots in their first two games to win the NFC South.
