NYC Pedestrian Deaths Drop 32 Percent Last Year
12 January 2018, 08:46 | Cesar Cruz
NYC reports fewest number of traffic fatalities since 1910
The number of pedestrians, motorists and cyclists killed in accidents on New York City streets previous year fell by 7 percent to 214 and by 28 percent from 2013 when officials began implementing a safety program known as Vision Zero. "The lower speed limit, increased enforcement, and safer street designs are all building on each other to keep New Yorkers safe", said Mayor de Blasio in a press release.
Last year's 23 fatalities among cyclists were almost double the number of bike riders who died in 2013, the year before Vision Zero was instituted. Since 2013, pedestrian deaths have fallen by 45 percent.
Earlier this month, de Blasio said the city would install more than 1,500 new barrier posts on sidewalks and plazas to protect pedestrians, after at least two instances a year ago of drivers killing people after mounting the curb.
The most striking decline was in the number of pedestrian casualties, which fell 32 percent a year ago to 101, and for the first time comprise less than half of the city's overall traffic fatalities.
Mayor de Blasio speaks at a press conference on January 25, 2017.
"Queens Boulevard is proof that longstanding notions of intractable problems can be solved with determination, perseverance and fresh thinking", said New York City Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer.
The decrease in pedestrian deaths helped lower the number of traffic fatalities overall by 7 percent for the same period, or from 231 to 214. In the last 10 years, Queens Boulevard became a notorious city thoroughfare because of so many deaths there.
"The number of lives lost on our streets is still too high, including the increases in fatalities we saw this year among cyclists, drivers and motorcyclists", said Polly Trottenberg, the commissioner of the city's Department of Transportation.
But bicycle fatalities were up in 2017.
"We will do more with our investments the NYPD will deepen its enforcement efforts we'll have more street redesigns you're going to see more work by TLC, DOT, everyone", de Blasio said.
