Moderate Democrats Get a Boost as Doug Jones Joins the Senate

Sure, Richard Jaffe, an Alabama defense lawyer fulfilled his professional obligation in defending the Moores' son Caleb from drug charges in 2016, but his heart belongs to the Democrat candidate and Alabama Senator-elect Doug Jones.

Biden will speak afterward to a gathering of Jones' friends and family, a person familiar with his plans said.

Jones made clear during his campaign - his first run for elected office - that he wanted to find "common ground" with Republicans.

As president of the Senate, the vice president has a unique relationship with the upper chamber and can cast a tie-breaking vote in the rare event that the Senate is evenly split.

They will narrow the Republican majority to 51-49.

Doug Jones of Alabama is one of two new members who will take the oath of office on the Senate floor at noon Wednesday.

Vice President Mike Pence conducted the swearing-in ceremony for both Democrats simultaneously.

"From her work on behalf of our veterans and the military - including her recent efforts to help bring the F-35 mission to Montgomery - to her support of Alabama's farmers, Martha Roby is the clear conservative choice for this seat", the statement said.
