The deadliest quake in Iran's modern history happened in June 1990, devastating many areas in the northern province of Gilan and killing around 37,000 people.

On November 12, a 7.3-magnitude quake killed 620 people in Kermanshah and eight in Iraq.

According to Iran's state TV, the western province of Kermanshah was hit by a strong quake.

The U.S. Geological Survey said five of the quakes struck near the Iraqi city of Mandali, followed by one that struck near Mehran in western Iran.

Iranian media are reporting that a magnitude 5.1 quake has jolted the country's southern province of Kerman.

All the earthquakes struck at a depth of six miles, according to the USGS.

At least four people were injured in several strong earthquakes in the western Iranian provinces of Kermanshah and Ilam on Thursday, state IRIB TV reported. The scientist says it appears that all are aftershocks from a November temblor that killed over 530 people.

"It's ongoing activity there". Many people are still living in temporary homes and tents.

The November natural disaster hit hardest in the Kurdish town of Sarpol-e-Zahab in the western Iranian province of Kermanshah, which is only 80km from where most of Thursday's earthquakes struck.

More than 530 people died in that natural disaster in Iran.

Iran sits on major fault lines and is prone to near-daily earthquakes.

A magnitude 6.6 quake flattened the historic city of Bam in south Iran and killed 26,000 people in 2003. No injuries or damage were reported.
