Some Oregonians panic about new self-service gas law

Oregonians Come to Terms with Pumping Their Own Gas
Previously, the state was one of only two in the nation - New Jersey is the other - that didn't allow patrons to pump their own gas, along with one town in NY. It's ludicrous to think that most of the State's population is legitimately terrified of pumping gas on their own.
An Oregon newspaper called "The Oregonian" went live on Facebook Wednesday, January 3, to give a step-by-step demonstration to show how it's done. "It's nice to not have to pump your own fuel". Now they protect me from transients who were otherwise ready to strike at me the moment I exited my vehicle to pump gas in my office attire in 5 degree MI weather.
"FEAR NOT OREGON! I've chose to move to Oregon to open a school to teach people how to pump their own gas", one man joked.
The stories, most of which stem from national and out-of-state publications, reference a new state law that passed without much fanfare in the 2017 Oregon Legislative and quietly went into effect Monday. I went to college in OR way back around the time of the Boer War, and the legend at the time was that there was some kind of awful self-serve gas accident back in the early 1960s (maybe someone forgot to put out their marijuana joint?), after which the state legislature banned it. The Bend Bulletin reported many gas stations said they'll continue to pump gas for customers despite the new law. Numerous commenters were concerned about the hazards of pumping their own gas like.
"I've never not pumped my own gas in my entire life!" MORE: http://bit.ly/2lnpGYPDo you think OR should allow self-serve gas stations statewide? "Every year thousands of people are killed by vicious road gangs who are after what little gas we have left". "On the skills spectrum, pumping gas is closer to "urinating by yourself" than it is to 'properly eating a lobster, ' or 'building a model rocket, '" writes Jason Torchinsky at Jalopnik. "You have now taken away a nice luxury that most of us enjoyed".
Since 1951 gas stations have been required to have attendants pump gas for customers. "I agree Very bad idea", another Facebooker wrote. This [is] a service only qualified people should perform. "I had to do it once in California while visiting my brother and nearly died doing it", one Oregonian wrote.
Emily LeRoy, executive director of the Tennessee Fuel & Convenience Store Association, said Wednesday Tennessee began allowing self-service gas in the mid-1970's.
