Tom Oates: GM hire holds key to Mike McCarthy's future in Green Bay

Mike McCarthy on what he wants in a new GM for the Packers

Head coach Mike McCarthy received a one-year contract extension during the 2017 season and will be retained despite the change in management. And while team president Mark Murphy was emphatic this week that McCarthy would be the coach, there's more to it than just a signed paper and some news conference jibber-jabber. He was promoted to coaching administrator in January 2007 and to defensive quality control coach on February 3, 2009.

Capers has been the defensive coordinator for the Packers for nine seasons, originally joining Green Bay on January 19, 2009.

General manager Ted Thompson also took some of the fall, getting moved to a senior advisor position. Having fired Capers Sunday, McCarthy said the three remaining staffers on defense - assistant head coach/linebackers coach Winston Moss, cornerbacks coach Joe Whitt and safeties coach Darren Perry - would interview for the defensive coordinator job.

"When you say you have a standard at the Green Bay Packers, it stops right there. I'm more focused on the fit of the GM", McCarthy said.

The Winning €39m Euromillions Ticket Was Sold In DUBLIN
Lotto bosses are now urging the victor to keep the ticket safe and contact the National Lottery office to claim their prize. It is expected the name of the shop that sold the winning ticket worth just under €40 million will be revealed on Thursday.

Part of the Ron Wolf scouting tree that also includes Seahawks general manager John Schneider, Browns general manager John Dorsey and Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie, Thompson joined the Packers in 1992 as assistant director of pro personnel. During all five of his seasons as the offensive coordinator, the Packers would finish top 10 in points and yards.

Now changes are being made on offense. In 2010, Capers coordinated a unit that finished No. 2 in the league in scoring defense (15.0 points per game) en route to winning Super Bowl XLV. On a personal note, Ted's work ethic, humility and loyalty are almost unparalleled, and it has been one of the great honors of my life to work beside him. When McCarthy became Packers head coach in 2006, McAdoo became his tight ends coach. McCurley worked his way up through the organization over the course of 12 years.

Who do you think should take over as the new offensive coordinator?

GREEN BAY, Wis. - The Green Bay Packers' coaching changes weren't limited to the defensive side of the ball. "It's going to be different, we're going to have some different voices, some different faces in here", said kicker Mason Crosby, one of the team's longest tenured players.
