Sturgeon urged to 'stop cutting hospital beds' at First Minister's Questions
Robison said: "Scotland's accident and emergency departments are continuing to outperform those across the rest of the United Kingdom - and indeed it is to the great credit of NHS staff that even at the height of these exceptional winter pressures, nearly eight out of ten people who attended A&E were admitted, transferred or discharged within the four hour target".
It comes as the consultants leading 68 NHS A&E departments wrote to the Prime Minister, warning of "appalling" safety risks because hospitals have too few staff and beds to cope with current demand.
Ms Sturgeon said levels of winter flu were now four times the level recorded in the same week of past year.
But it adds: 'The facts remain, however, that the NHS is severely and chronically underfunded'.
An 80-year-old man waited more than three hours for an ambulance and then spent 13 hours stranded on a hospital trolley waiting for treatment, it has emerged.
'An average of 10-12 hours from decision to admit a patient until they are transferred to a bed'.
Responding to the claims during First Minister's Questions, Ms Sturgeon said the "health service budget has gone up to record levels, the number of people who work in our health service has gone up to record levels and the number of delayed discharges has gone down over the past year".
So as a matter of urgency we ask that you consider supporting strategies that will reduce crowding in our Emergency Departments.

He doesn't want that opportunity to pass him by. "I just want to be valued where I'm at", per ESPN . The Steelers could also choose to use the franchise tag, a prospect Bell clearly doesn't welcome.
NHS Providers is also calling for a full review of how well the NHS handled this winter, looking at: adequacy of bed numbers and staffing levels; efficacy of the new national planning approach; adequacy, timing and allocation of extra winter funding; system resilience; process and impact of cancelled elective operations; and the role and availability of primary care and social care, and their involvement in winter planning.
We also acknowledge the help and support given to the Emergency Departments by our colleagues in other specialties and disciplines across our hospitals.
Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was flagged as the worst-performing major A&E department, known as "type 1" units within the NHS, with just 40.1% of patients being seen within four hours in December. They have urged people to stay away from surgeries because there is no treatment. These patients are sometimes forced to sleep in clinics and wards that are prepared hurriedly to accommodate the rush.
And patients in ambulances also faced long waits, with one in eight left outside for half an hour or longer. They ended the letter signing on behalf of themselves and their departmental staff.
NHS Scotland figures and the health secretary, Shona Robison, pointed to an increase in flu as part of the reason for the poor results.
A spokesman for The Save Weston A&E Campaign, which has been pushing for A&E to reopen overnight, said: "We feel deeply sorry for Mrs Thomas and her family and wish her a quick and full recovery, but we are also well aware of the very hard conditions under which dedicated NHS staff at Weston General are having to work". The doctors, the nurses, the ambulance crews, the patients and their families want to know what you are going to do to fix this mess.

Curry, James lead fan voting for All-Star game
Coaches will then choose the reserves and the two top vote-getters from each conference get to pick their teammates from the pool. I think George will surpass Draymond Green and DeMarcus Cousins because of people liking him more than they like those two.
