Bears Hire Offensive Coordinator
13 January 2018, 03:36 | Brandon Parsons
The Bears are expected to hire former Oregon Ducks coach Mark Helfrich as offensive coordinator. He was the first candidate to interview for the Bears' coaching job after John Fox was sacked, but general manager Ryan Pace ultimately made a decision to go with former Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy.
Helfrich was a 37-16 in his four seasons leading OR, including a Rose Bowl victory and national championship appearance in January 2015.
But the move to professional football comes after Helfrich spent the 2017 season as a college football television analyst for Fox Sports, a position which he accepted after being fired from Oregon's head coaching position in November of 2016. Helfrich served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at OR from 2009 to 2012 so he will bring an interesting dynamic to Halas Hall.
Hiestand returned to the Bears after stints at the University of Tennessee (2010-11) and Notre Dame (2012-17).
Helfrich will not be calling plays initially, but he will inherit a second-year quarterback in Mitchell Trubisky. He was sacked on the heels of a 4-8 finish in 2016.
Oregon's offensive coordinator from 2009-'12, Helfrich first oversaw the Chip Kelly up-tempo spread offense, which he continued as the Ducks' head coach from 2013-'16 after Kelly left for the NFL. Nagy spent the past decade working under Andy Reid in Philadelphia and Kansas City and served as the Chiefs' offensive coordinator this past season.
This week has been a bit of a roller coaster for Chicago Bears' fans as they wait the fate on popular defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. But the Bears will need to acquire some playmaking receivers.
Helfrich becomes the second coordinator to be hired after the Bears named Chris Tabor as special teams coordinator on Wednesday. He's worked in Chicago before, serving as a quality control coach and offensive assistant from 2007-'09.
