Although bomb cyclones are not necessarily uncommon, they can result in powerful storms under certain conditions, and forecasters have warned states lining the east coast that this bomb cyclone could be just as powerful as Hurricane Sandy.

Much of the state is under a weather alert, from freeze warnings and wind chill advisory to a winter storm warning.

The last time Florida's capital got any measurable snowfall was in December 1989, when one inch fell.

"Freezing rain mixing with sleet continues from Tallahassee into south central Georgia and the eastern Florida Big Bend region", tweeted the National Weather Service office in Tallahassee.

"It's snowing in Tallahassee, Florida for the first time in 28 years", Mike Seidel, a meteorologist and field reporter for The Weather Channel, tweeted on January 3.

The National Weather Service said snow and freezing rain was expected to spread up the coast and warned that icy roads and low visibility could make driving treacherous.

He's got bags of quality and there'll be a number of Premier League teams circling around over the next few weeks. Southampton and West Ham are two of the clubs reported to be interested in securing his services.

Savannah saw measurable snowfall for the first time since February 2010. Police even had to close the bridges and overpasses in the city out of concern for drivers.

Although not all Tallahassee residents may have been excited by the chilly temperatures and snow, a handful of people (and furry friends) were thrilled by their usually sunny home being transformed into a winter wonderland. But Florida, especially its northern reaches, can certainly see temperatures drop when cold air invades from the north, as it has over the last few days.

The icy weather forced airports to shut down in Savannah and Charleston, where 3 to 4 inches (8 to 10 centimeters) of snow was forecast about 20 miles (32 kilometers) inland from the coast. Temperatures are running well below normal for this time of year, and the lows are expected to hover right around freezing.

Sharon Rosenberg, a 35-year-old physical therapist who has lived in the state capital her entire life, said her family bundled up and went outside early in the morning hoping to catch a glimpse of the snow falling.

Parts of Florida got a dose of winter weather on Wednesday morning when Mother Nature brought snow and ice to the Sunshine State.
