Human Trafficking Awareness Month: Stopping it starts with spotting it

The fundraiser is continuing all month long, as part of January being "National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month".

Some would say that Human Trafficking is only sex trafficking but the truth is, according to the National Health and Human Services Hotline, that of the 20 million victims globally 60% are forced labor, 10% state-imposed forced labor and 22% are sexually exploited.

The Hogan administration explained that human trafficking crimes are "cases in which the perpetrator trafficks a child or trafficks a victim with the intent to forcibly compel the victim to perform a sexual act".

Educating others is their main goal this year. Several Oakland County judges and representatives from the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office, Homeland Security, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and numerous local law enforcement departments and social service agencies will be in attendance to show their support of the ongoing and collaborative effort to fight human trafficking in Oakland County.

He said that "Human traffickers prey on their victims by promising a life of hope and greater opportunity while delivering only enslavement. This doesn't make who we are", she said.

Along with hotel employees, she's already provided training for several of them locally.
