Russia claims Ukraine might be involved in drone attack on Hmeymim airbase in Syria
The Russian army has said that it has "eliminated" the militants behind a mortar attack on a base in Syria on New Year's Eve that killed two Russian soldiers.
On Wednesday, the defence ministry said the drones were sent from Syria's Idlib province, a "de-escalation" zone controlled by anti-Damascus fighters. The worship is likely linked to the armed drone attack on Hmeimim airbase, and Tartus naval facility base on January 6.
Moscow has claimed that the drones, which were made of wood, tape and lawn mower engines, were too sophisticated and operated from too far a distance to have been executed by themselves. The second involved 13 drones armed with bomblets, which were all either shot down or forced to land via means of electronic warfare by Russian forces.
"The creation of drones of such class is impossible in makeshift conditions", Novikov said.
"The Russian military reconnaissance has uncovered a terrorist fixed-wing drone assembly and storage place in the province of Idlib". This can happen in other countries and not only against military targets.
Russian Federation launched its campaign in Syria in support of its ally President Bashar al-Assad in September 2015.
However, a government offensive helped by Iran-backed militia has gathered pace in Idlib in the last two weeks, according to rebels and a military media unit run by Lebanon's Hezbollah, which is fighting on the Syrian government side.
Russian Federation has repeatedly insinuated that the rebels who carried out the drone attack on its military bases in Syria had help from the US, Turkey, and even Ukraine.
He added that he discussed the raid with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan earlier Thursday, voicing confidence that Turkey's Turkish leadership and military had nothing to do with it. Secondly, it was about our relations with our partners - Turkey and Iran. We know whom and how much they paid for these provocations....
