3 new revelations from the Glenn Simpson testimony
The founders of the controversial opposition research firm Fusion GPS admitted that they helped the researcher hired to compile the infamous, largely discredited 35-page dossier on President Donald Trump to share the document with Sen. Dianne Feinstein, ranking Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, to make public the testimony before the committee from Glenn Simpson, cofounder of Fusion GPS, makes it clear that civil war has broken out on Capitol Hill. But since the Senate intelligence committee wouldn't release the transcript, we couldn't know just how much Simpson had spilled his guts.
"After speaking with majority and minority committee staff for 10 hours, Glenn Simpson requested the transcript of his interview be released publicly". Republican Sens. Charles Grassley, Iowa, committee chair, and Lindsey Graham, S.C., also on the committee with Feinstein, have referred Simpson for criminal prosecution.
Trump also repeated that the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 US election is a "Witch Hunt" and says "Republicans should finally take control!" Diane Feinstein (D-CA) showed that Christopher Steele, the author of the salacious Russian dossier on Trump, "was not acting as some political operative" when he turned over the document to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Ironically, Feinstein's recent moves against President Trump might be what gets her through what was already looking like a challenging primary race. Chuck Grassley first. Fox News'Laura Ingraham asked her guests on Wednesday's "The Ingraham Angle" if Feinstein indeed broke the law, and the consensus was a resounding "no".
Democrats have charged that the FBI investigations are meant to be a distraction from separate investigations into the Russian meddling and whether Trump's campaign was involved.
If not for Steele's file, the GOP reasoning goes, the FBI would never have started down the path of investigating Trump, which would never have led to FBI Director James Comey approaching Trump about the file; absent this, Comey would never have been fired, there would be no Mueller probe, and all would be right with the world.
As reported last night, the file has been central to these investigations, with Democrats claiming it to be a roadmap to alleged collusion and corruption by Trump whereas Republicans and Trump's inner circle insisting that it is filled with unverified claims that the FBI may have used to improperly to secure a warrant to spy on Trump's campaign and transition.
She did not necessarily voice regret for releasing the transcript itself, however. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., was explaining the outlines of an agreement that six senators had reached to protect hundreds of thousands of young immigrants from deportation and bolster border security, the people said.
"I made no statement to that effect", Feinstein said about being pressured.
The criminal referral urged the DOJ to examine whether Steele made false statements to the Federal Bureau of Investigation "about the distribution of claims" contained in the dossier. "Republicans should finally take control!" he wrote.
