African National Congress secretary general Ace Magashule briefs the media at the Absa Stadium in East London, on 12 January 2018.
Several ANC insiders familiar with negotiations on Zuma's future told the Mail and Guardian that one of the key requirements would be that ANC MP Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma takes over as the country's interim president after he steps down.
Notably the condition that Dlamini-Zuma serve as interim president has been rejected by Ramaphosa, who has instead nominated Human Settlements Minister Lindiwe Sisulu or National Assembly speaker Baleka Mbete for the role.
State Security Minister Bongani Bongo is another Cabinet appointee that Zuma wants to have retained‚ according to the report.
Only party President Cyril Ramaphosa‚ his top six leaders and ANC Eastern Cape chairman Oscar Mabuyane were allowed into the palatial home located along the N2 near Mthatha.
The latest developments came as pressure was mounting on Zuma to resign.
This would mean, amongst other things, that Dlamini Zuma would retain presidential benefits after being an acting stateswoman. But news that Zuma's resignation was not even discussed at the NEC meeting resulted in a dip in the rand, Business Tech reported.
Piotr Matys, emerging market strategist at Rabobank, warned that ousting Zuma could also cause trouble for the South African currency, saying that: "The governing ANC could be engulfed in political bickering between Zuma's camp and members of the party who voted for Ramaphosa".
A crowd of up to 120‚000 is expected to attend the rally which will also be attended by foreign and local statesmen such as Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta‚ former President Kgalema Motlanthe and President Jacob Zuma.
