Alex Hales has learnt his lesson, says skipper Eoin Morgan

Returning Hales and skipper Morgan help England to tour victory

Ahead of a busy worldwide schedule, including home Test matches against India and Pakistan, England coach Trevor Bayliss has urged Root to skip the 2018 Indian Premier League. They are running high on confidence and will look to transform it into a good performance when the two teams meet in the first ODI at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

They found it hard facing Australia's pace attack during the Test series and while Josh Hazlewood will rest from the first game, Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins will be going around, likely alongside debutant Jhye Richardson. England have been a successful team in the limited-overs format and have won matches with their aggressive approach.

But there is already disquiet in some quarters that with so much emphasis on how best to prepare for the next Ashes series in Australia in 2021, two years of planning will effectively be put in place by a coach who will not be there to see the job through, and whose successor might have different ideas anyway.

Sitting down at the MCG, where England had been thrashed by Australia in the opening match of the 2015 World Cup on the way to early elimination, Morgan said the struggles of that tournament had been a major catalyst for change, along with the knowledge that the next event would be held at home. We have done that a bit with the bat, we will try and continue taking wickets with the ball. Smith has got an inside edge.

For what it is worth, I also hope that England can bumble along with Bayliss until September next year because they could well do without the attendant upheaval. Ali bowled a solid mid-innings Spell of 1-39 from 10 overs.

Australia have liberally employed stand-in coaches for some limited overs assignments themselves using them as an opportunity to trial the best coaches in the country while giving Darren Lehmann a break.

The 50-over series beginning in Melbourne on Sunday begins a run up to the World Cup after which both England's coach Trevor Bayliss and his Australian counterpart Darren Lehmann will depart their roles, with neither man willing to extend their contract any further.

0815 hrs IST: Big match for England as well.

Bayliss, however, deserves credit for what he has achieved, with England's one-day side unrecognisable from the ragtag outfit that so disappointed at the 2015 World Cup in Australasia.

0800 hrs IST: Welcome to the coverage of the first ODI between Australia and England.
